Back-to-School Green

It’s that time of year – chances are your youngins’ have started back to school. I’ve done blogs in the past on how to be green with school kids, but let’s do a quick review. Here are some questions you may want to ask your school: Do they recycle? If so, there should be bins labeled for paper, cans, and cardboard. What are the teachers teaching? Going green is becoming a bigger part of education, so don’t hesitate to ask your child’s teacher what she is doing as far as a green education. Don’t be afraid to suggest green projects … Continue reading

No Wire Hangers

No, no, I am not talking about the Joan Crawford tirade “I told you! No wire hangers, ever!” No Wire Hangers is the name of a green home organizing business located in Los Angeles and owned by Julie Naylon. Julie is a professional organizer who is also passionate about being eco-friendly. A lot of people want to be green, but may stop short because they aren’t exactly sure what to do (and don’t read my blog!). Julie helps them lead a “more ecologically minded lifestyle.” Julie grew up concerned about the environment, but ended up in the entertainment business after … Continue reading

Convertible Carseat

Although my only child is an infant, I feel like I have a small window into the world of parents sending their kids off to their first day of school. They dab at their eyes with tissues, give tearful hugs, then burst into tears as they (or the school bus) drive(s) away. They exclaim, “It’s too soon!” What gave me this insight? Today, my daughter will be riding in a convertible car seat for the first time. I can’t believe she already outgrew her infant car seat. It seems like only yesterday that we were putting her in the car … Continue reading

Replenishing School Supplies

It’s that time of year when school supplies need to be replenished. This provides an opportunity to think of environmentally friendly ways to stock up on necessities, such as pencils, paper, and notebooks. However, instead of mindlessly grabbing whatever is stocked on the shelves, take some time to search for eco-friendly items. First, think recycle! Although pencils aren’t high on the list of green living offenders, some are painted or lacquered over. Pencils can be recycled from newspapers, cedar wood or even blue jeans. Anything that is recyclable can be used to turn an object into something “green.” Some other … Continue reading

10 Ways for a Homeschooling Mom to Support Herself.

Valorie Delp recently wrote an article entitled 10 Ways to Support Your Child’s Teacher the article had lots of helpful advice for parents of schoolchildren, but her tips applied to anyone with children. Likewise, I would like to talk about 10 ways for a homeschooling mom to support herself. Being both mom and teacher is a big job, so here are 10 ways for us homeschoolers to support ourselves. 1. Set expectations at an early age: Remind your kids on a daily basis that they can do anything that they put their minds to. Let them know that you expect … Continue reading
