Pop Culture Roundup – January 31, 2010

As I sit here watching the Grammys, I thought I should blog about a few pop culture happenings that occurred this week. Actor Rip Torn had a bad week as he was arrested for entering a closed bank in Connecticut with a loaded revolver. Police in Salisbury, Conn., where Torn lives, said the actor was highly intoxicated when they arrived, responding to the alarm he set off. The 78 year old, who has recently appeared on NBC’s “30 Rock,” was being held on a $100,000 bond. Some might say it was a worse week for author J.D. Salinger, as he … Continue reading

“24” Is Going Green

Kiefer Sutherland stars in the hit drama “24.” It’s a real action-packed show that has gone green. Actually, it was around season four that the series aimed to reduce its carbon footprint, according to Sutherland. In an interview Sutherland mentions that it’s not possible to completely erase their carbon footprint because they do have to drive to work. However, all of the trucks driven on the set are hybrids. Sutherland also shares that cast members were making a lot of changes within the office and production building to help preserve the planet. One of the actresses in the show, Katee … Continue reading

World’s Most Polluted Beaches 1

If you are like me, when you think of a beach, you think of vacation, sun, white sand, lawn chairs with umbrellas, and a frosty drink that contains slices of fruit. But, that is not always the case with many of the world’s beaches. Some are nasty, polluted places that no one wants to visit. While many are fighting today to protect oceans and beaches, many are still in need of a lot of help. Such is the plight of the Chowpatty Beach in Mumbai, India. The beach is filled with debris, including remains of salvaged ships. And if it … Continue reading

Alicia Silverstone’s Controversial Method of Feeding

When my son was little – eight months old or so – he would feed me. I’d put a Cheerio in his mouth and he’d let it get all soggy, then he would take it out of his mouth and feed it to me. It would gross my husband out, but when my son did this, I’d let him and begrudgingly eat the soggy Cheerio. After all, he was my baby, he didn’t know, and he was trying to feed me. Thankfully this phase didn’t last long. This week, we learned that actress Alicia Silverstone chews up her 10-month-old son’s … Continue reading

The 2012 Golden Globes

The 2012 Golden Globes are over and the award season has officially kicked off. Who were the big winners? George Clooney for one. My best friend came over to watch and noted that Clooney was working the room, talking to everyone, mingling. That’s because as far as I can tell, it’s George Clooney’s world, we just live in it. He stole Brad Pitt’s cane (the actor had it because of a recent knee injury), quipped about Michael Fassbender, uh, golf game, and even tried to save the night by getting Meryl Streep her glasses so she could read her acceptance … Continue reading

Missing Haiti Relief Money

One thing about Americans is they will give during a time of need. For the 9/11 tragedy, the Haiti earthquake, the Japanese tsunami – even in this era of hard economic times, Americans still are able to give to help others. The downside is we often forget a tragedy once the next one hits. After the devastating Haiti earthquake of 2010, many celebrities offered their time and money to help. One, hip hop star Wyclef Jean, took it a bit further and even tried to run for president of his native country. His request was declined because he had not … Continue reading
