Bad Housekeeping Habits

What is the biggest pet peeve you have when it comes to the housekeeping habits of others? Because let’s face it. There is probably something that others in our home do that we wish they wouldn’t do. For instance…I wish my family wouldn’t leave the empty cardboard tube on the paper towel holder. And instead they would throw it out and put a new roll on. I wish my family wouldn’t keep stuffing garbage into the can, when it is clearly starting to fall out, and instead see it needs to be taken out. I wish I wouldn’t go into … Continue reading

Breaking Bad Bathroom Habits

The other day one of my children hopped in the shower. When I am downstairs in our rec room I can hear the water running through the pipes. A few minutes passed and I thought to myself, “Sure is taking a long shower.” Then another few minutes passed. Finally, after 20 minutes I banged on the bathroom door and called out, “Hey, let’s end this shower!” There are so many bathroom habits that many of us have that are far from green friendly. However, we don’t always give a lot of thought to those. Taking unnecessarily long showers is one … Continue reading

Infamous Minneapolis Airport Bathroom Getting Make Over

In a previous blog I described how a single restroom in the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport was fast becoming one of the Twin Cities’ most popular tourist attractions. Thanks to Senator Larry Craig, the infamous airport men’s room where his recent arrest took place is now getting new stall dividers that stop just shy of the floor. It’s an addition airport officials say makes the stalls less inviting for inappropriate liaisons. Currently, the dividers leave enough space so a person could easily duck under them. Back in June an undercover police officer said Craig allegedly used the open space under … Continue reading

Two Secrets to a Guest-Ready Home

I don’t have the cleanest home in the world, and not every area is neat and organized.  But it is almost always guest-ready.  So if I get a phone call that someone is dropping by, I usually don’t have to run around like a chicken with its head cut off to straighten things up. So what’s my secret?  I have a couple. Let me share the first one.  It is that I don’t make messes and I don’t allow for them. If there is a struggle you or someone in the home is having, when it comes to messes, then … Continue reading

The Whistling Kettle

Spending a great deal of time with our son has helped me understand how children learn. While my continued presence doesn’t count as hard scientific data, it should provide a case study of some sort. Every day I’m constantly amazed by the new things he seems to have picked up in relation to our time spent together. The world the surrounds me is, to a large extent, the world that surrounds him. Simple things like where the kitchen or bathroom is were once amazing skills. Now he has a new skill under his belt. I didn’t realize how amazing it … Continue reading

Conserving Water

Why should we conserve water? One of the main reasons is so we don’t run out. We don’t want our intake to exceed the ecosystems output. Also, facilities that provide water – pumping stations, delivery companies, and wastewater treatment – all consume a lot of energy to do what they do. In California, 15 percent of their electricity is used for water management. Finally, conserving water helps conserve the habitat of local wildlife. So you may be thinking “Sounds great – how do we conserve water?” The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has come up with a web page all about … Continue reading

Tea Tree Oil: Worth The Risks?

I’ll admit it. I jumped on the tea tree oil bandwagon, and I don’t want to get off. Tea tree oil is said to have numerous uses and health benefits. From relieving the itch of insect bites and speeding up the healing process of cuts and bruises, to clearing up acne and curing athlete’s foot, it seems there is nothing tea tree oil can’t do. I didn’t start using tea tree oil until I came across recipes for homemade baby wipe solutions that called for a couple drops of the oil. My baby has always had sensitive skin that is … Continue reading

The Basics for Brushing

Just because we brush every day (often twice a day) doesn’t mean we’re doing it right! Studies have shown that there are lots of people out there who have bad brushing habits. Here are some tips to help you get it right. Don’t brush too hard. You can actually hurt your teeth and gums this way. A thorough brushing takes two minutes or more — whether you use an electric toothbrush or a traditional one. Set a timer if you need to. Most people think they’re brushing long enough and they just aren’t. Those “Tooth Tunes” brushes are great for … Continue reading

Tip of the Day- Replace Your Toothbrush

I admit it. I’ve been using the same toothbrush for a very long time. I think it’s a comfort issue. I like to know that when I stumble through my morning routine that the same shampoo, soap, towel, and toothbrush will greet me. Realistically, toothbrushes should be replaced every three to four months. Toothbrushes do wear out. When the bristles start to lose their shape or start to look “fuzzy”, it’s time to get a new brush. A new toothbrush cleans your teeth about 30% better than the one you have been using for more than three months. If you … Continue reading

Don’t Try This At Home: When Frugality Goes Wrong

When frugality goes wrong, it really goes wrong. There are just some things that are not a good idea to practice, no matter how much you want to save. In an effort to be frugal, sometimes people will unknowingly do things that are illegal or put themselves and their families at risk. Here is my list of some things you should not do while practicing a frugal lifestyle: 1. Compromise baby safety. I see plenty of people who curb shop (pick things up from the curb) or tag sale for car seats, cribs and high chairs. This is a dangerous … Continue reading
