Bugs Bugs Go Away

It’s summer and at least here in Jacksonville, N.C., that means bugs and lots of them. But, I hate pesticides. It just seems wrong to spray chemicals to get rid of bugs. I was overjoyed when I found some natural bug repellents from Richard Fagerlund from his book “The Bugman on Bugs: Understanding Household Pests and the Environment.” To get rid of ants, mix 2 tablespoons of peanut butter, two tablespoons of jelly, and one teaspoon of boric acid. Put that in a small, disposable container and sit it where the ants are. If you have a mound you need … Continue reading

Bug Bites Be Gone

My 5-year-old recently came home from school with a bug bite. Bug bites at the end of September? I’m not an entomologist, but it looks like a mosquito took a hit from her eyebrow. I was a bit shocked that she got bit so late in the season, but we have had an unusually warm September, so I guess the bugs have decided to stick around. Too bad. I was hoping our days of being buffet options for hungry bugs were over for the year. Apparently not. This means that I have to dig out my DEET-free insect repellent once … Continue reading

How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs

Bed bugs have come home. It used to be that you had to be concerned when you slept in a hotel. While that fear is very valid, you also have to worry about bed bugs at home. They hitch rides into your home in suitcases from your hotel rooms. They come into your home in delivery boxes. They come into your home in used furniture. They come into your home or apartment through the walls from your next door neighbors house. They may even already be there when you move in. Just read about Maya Rudolf’s issue with bed bugs … Continue reading

Naturally Vindictive Ways to Kill Bugs

If you are sick of bugs in your house, your garden, and your hard you will be glad to know that you can get rid of most of the bugs yourself. An added perk is that you can do it naturally. Even more interesting for some is knowing that the bugs will suffer as they die. Mix two tablespoons of liquid soap such as dish detergent or Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castille Soaps (preferred)to kill garden pests on contact. Don’t get carried away or you may kill nearby vegetation. The soap disrupts the cell membranes of the bugs and dehydrates them. … Continue reading

If you’re looking for a fun and entertaining way to teach your children about bugs, “The Magic School Bus: Bugs, Bugs, Bugs!” is a great way to go about it. What Fall Means to Your Pet: The Good, the Bad, and the Sniffly

Just like many of us humans, animals rejoice in fall’s coming too. The milder weather lends to more outdoor time, which is good, but it can also be not so good. The Good: Outdoor Time My Murph likes fall because it means more time sitting on the back deck, longer walks, and more frequent trips to the park. It’s easy to both sneak in more exercise and relaxation at this time of year. The cooler weather also often revives Murph, making him a bit more perky and frisky. He’s more inclined to play tugga-tugga with his shaky ball in the … Continue reading

Tip of the Day- Put away Your Antibacterial Soap

Ok, some of you are going to think I’m really off the wall with this one. Here it goes anyway. Do you remember that scene at the end of War of the Worlds (sorry I never could get through the book so I don’t know if it’s there as well) where the heroes are pontificating on the reasons why the robot monsters are suddenly imploding. The only line I remember from the whole movie is: “We’ve earned the right to be here.” I’m probably quoting it wrong. I didn’t like the movie much. Here’s the deal though, they were right. … Continue reading

“You’re talking about bugs again?” Obsessions and Asperger’s Disorder

One of the hallmarks of Asperger’s disorder (and certain other disorders) is a child’s tendency to be obsessed with particular topics. He might want to constantly talk about video games, race cars, cartoon characters, movies, or even bugs. It can be very frustrating for parents and teachers to deal with an obviously bright, articulate child who is somehow “stuck” in one particular frame of reference. How can we break kids of these obsessive thoughts and ideas? The honest answer is… we may not be able to entirely eliminate them. Some children will gradually leave one special interest behind, only to … Continue reading
