Surface mining is the practice of the removing the soil and rock over a mineral deposit, such as coal. Rather than digging an underground shaft, the mineral is removed from the top, so there is no chance of collapse of a shaft.

A lot of celebrities preach green living practices today, but few put their money where their mouth is like actor Leonardo DiCaprio. DiCaprio started The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation in 1998 to help bring attention to certain environmental issues.
