Learning Unit – Japan and Natural Disasters

We have all watched the news reports from Japan with horror and sadness. Some of us have children old enough to understand the ramifications, and some of us have children too young to comprehend. I suggest using this monumental event in our world’s history as a study unit in our homeschools. Geography –pull out maps or our globe and discuss where Japan is, what its major cities are, and learn what other countries surround it. Social Studies – learn about the culture of Japan and what makes it such a strong, proud country. Learn to make some traditional Japanese dishes … Continue reading

Celebrities Support Japan

As often happens after a natural disaster, many celebrities are turning out to help support Japan after the devastating earthquake and tsunami. Lady GaGa is marketing “We Pray for Japan” wristbands for $5, saying on her website that “All proceeds go directly to Japan relief efforts.” In addition to ordering a wristband, you can also make donations to the relief effort. The wristbands are cute and I actually ordered one the other day. So far, the controversial singer has raised $250,000. If you would like to order one, visit Lady GaGa’s page – you don’t even have to be a … Continue reading

Celebrities Go Global

Talk show host Craig Ferguson knows how to get laughs the world over, but now the Scottish-born comedian says he wants to concentrate on making American audiences chuckle and he has just the plan to do so. Never mind that the guy already has a nightly late night TV talk show, the “Late Late Show” host says he wants to show his commitment to American audiences by becoming an official U.S. citizen. Ferguson recently announced that he got a perfect score on his citizenship test, taken late last week in Los Angeles. According to the late night chatter, he will … Continue reading

Sandra Bullock Wins Humanitarian Award

Last Wednesday, the People’s Choice Awards was held at the Nokia Theater.  These awards are pretty cool because the celebrity honors are chosen by the people rather than industry professionals like the other award shows. The Hunger Games won five awards, singer Katy Perry won three, and Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston won for best comedic actors. One special award went to Sandra Bullock, not for acting, but for her humanitarian efforts. Bullock was recognized for her many philanthropic efforts.  She has been a great supporter of the American Red Cross, having given the organization millions over the years after … Continue reading

Lady Gaga Gets Bigger

Lady Gaga’s fame has seen an incredible increase within the past few years. After the release of The Fame in 2008, which included the hit “Poker Face,” her career took off dramatically. That was followed up with The Fame Monster, which produced hits “Bad Romance,” “Telephone,” and “Alejandro.” She went on tour for 18 months and it became one of the highest grossing tours ever. Born This Way was released in 2011 and sold a bazillion copies (okay, not really, but it did sell over a million copies the first week it was released). She has a devoted following (her … Continue reading

The U.S. and Our Nuclear Power Plants

As we still watch with bated breath as Japan tries to prevent a total meltdown of its nuclear reactor, many people in the U.S. are wondering about the stability of our own nuclear power plants. We have 104 nuclear reactors. What are the chances that an earthquake here could cause the type of damage to a nuclear power plant like the one in Japan? Well, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) assures us the odds are practically astronomical. They said the odds of an earthquake causing failure at a nuclear plant is 1 in 74,176. What nuclear power plants might … Continue reading

World Water Day – 2011

It’s World Water Day again. Every March 22 since 1993 has been officially declared World Water day by the United Nations (U.N.). I know that I take clean water for granted. I turn on my tap and out it pours. Well, at least we hope it is clean. But imagine if we had a natural disaster on the scales of that Japan just had – would we be able to get clean water? Now imagine having to live with that thought every day, even though no natural disaster has occurred. More than one billion people don’t have access to drinkable … Continue reading

The History of the Toys for Tots Program

You have probably seen advertisement in your local community for the Toys for Tots program. This is the program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve that gives toys to needy children in the community. The program was started in 1947 by Major Bill Hendricks for the Los Angeles, California area. The first year, Major Hendricks collected 5,000 toys, with the first being a Raggedy Ann Doll made by Hendrick’s wife, Diane. Seeing there was a need for such a program, in 1948, it went national. The United States Marine Corps adopted the program as a project for its … Continue reading

John Lennon’s One-Of-A-Kind Birthday Present

Ten days from now one of John Lennon’s dreams will finally come true. On what would have been the legendary singer’s 67th birthday, his wife, Yoko Ono will unveil the Imagine Peace Tower in Reykjavik, Iceland. Ono said the monument is something that she and Lennon spoke about at length more than 40 years ago and now, finally, their dream is coming to fruition. The Imagine Peace Tower is a light sculpture that will beam light from a wishing well bearing the words “imagine peace” in 24 languages. The tower’s light will glow each year from October 9th to December … Continue reading
