America the Wasteful

Not long ago, I blogged about Freegans and how they get their food from garbage cans. While some may find that a bit repulsive, let me share some facts with you. I read in an NPR article today about a new report by the National Resources Defense Council titled “Wasted: How America Is Losing Up to 40 Percent of Its Food from Farm to Fork to Landfill.” Think the titles shocking? Then you should hear some of what’s in it. Stat like 40 percent of the food in the United States goes uneaten. And, this is a time when the … Continue reading

Actor David Arquette is known for his roles in films like Scream and Eight Legged Freaks . He’s been a professional wrestling champion (yes, really), started a clothing line with musician Ben Harper (Propr), and married a famous “Friend” (Courtney Cox). Now, he is filling yet another role – as that of the chairman of Feeding America’s Entertainment Council. Feeding America is a charity fighting against domestic hunger. Good Charlotte Fights Hunger

I’ve written about Feeding America before. They are the organization that united with the postal workers one Saturday each year to collect canned and dry goods for the hungry. Actor David Arquette is the chairman of Feeding America’s Entertainment Council. Now, band Good Charlotte has joined Feeding America to “bar hunger.” I put that in quotes because, yes, the organization is trying to end hunger, but it is a bit of a play on words. Now, when you purchase specially marked Snicker bars, you can text the code on the wrapper and the company, through Feeding America, will provide two … Continue reading

More Celebrity Divorces

A couple of weeks ago, I blogged that it is “It’s a revolving marital door in Hollywood” and this week, the door shut on a few more marriages. The first celebrity split I learned about this week was Laura Dern and Ben Harper. Harper filed for divorce last Friday, stating irreconcilable differences. He also asked for joint custody of the couple’s children, son Ellery Walker, 9, and Jaya, 5. Dern and Harper started dating shortly after her then-boyfriend Billy Bob Thornton married Angelina Jolie while Dern was away shooting a movie. Dern and Harper dated for five years before marrying … Continue reading

President Obama’s Town Hall Meeting with Seniors

President Obama has met a lot of opposition to his new health-care law, but today, he tried to win over senior citizens as many watched his live broadcast about changes in Medicare. Senior citizens may be one of the most concerned groups about health care. After all, as many people age, their health starts to fail or at least become more fragile. And most senior citizens are on a limited budget. With medical care and prescriptions rising, the cause for alarm is understandable. Under the new health-care law, seniors on Medicare will begin receiving $250 drug rebate checks in the … Continue reading

This Saturday, your letter carrier, i.e. mailperson, will pick up canned goods and non-perishable food items for the annual “Stamp Out Hunger” drive. The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) has been doing this for 18 years now. This year, Campbell Soup Company is teaming up with them in what is the largest single-day food drive in the country. The letter carriers do this every May to help stock of the food pantries, which often run short of food during the summer. Despite hard times, the letter carriers collected 73.4 million pounds of food last year. The U.S. Department of … Continue reading
