School Buses: Another Idle Threat

I have been blogging about vehicle idling and the damage it can do to your wallet and the environment. The rule of thumb is to turn your engine off if you plan on sitting idle for more than 30 seconds. No, it won’t hurt the engine and no, idling won’t help your car warm up. But, even if everyone turned their vehicles off, there is still another idling threat – school buses. It is estimated that each day, 24 million kids in the U.S. ride school buses. That means there are about 600,000 school buses on the road each day. … Continue reading

Saving Money on Gas

We just returned from vacation. While gas prices are a bit better – at least in our part of the country (Memphis), when we drove to Florida, we noticed about a 20 cent per gallon increase. If you still have some traveling plans, there are a few ways you can save on gas: Clean out your car. I bowl in a league each week and I am bad about carrying my bowling ball in my car constantly. But, 250 extra pounds will lose a gallon of gas a mile for you. So, take out the stuff you don’t use daily. … Continue reading

Whole Foods Market Take on Sustainability Part 2

Yesterday, I was talking about Whole Foods Market and its stance on sustainability. I don’t know if you have one in your city, but there is one in Memphis right down the street from me and it is always jam packed. I think the idea of eating healthier and supporting a grocery store that seems to be concerned about society and the environment is very appealing to many people today. Here’s a few more of Whole Food Markets’ policies, Respect For All Forms Of Life Whole Foods Market is against the senseless killing of any animal or cruelty to those … Continue reading

UPS Leads the Way in Green Delivery

When you think of the delivery business, green is probably not the first thing that comes to mind. The delivery truck drivers drive around all day and when they aren’t on the move, they may sit idle at times. The greenhouse gas emissions have to be awful. But, United Parcel Service (UPS) is trying to lead the way to a greener way of delivering. UPS recently added 200 new hybrid-electric delivery trucks to its fleet. The company already had 50 of these trucks in place. You are probably thinking that 250 trucks aren’t much, especially considering the company has 90,000 … Continue reading

More about Idling in Your Car

Yesterday, I blogged about why you shouldn’t sit idle with your engine running for more than 30 seconds. Now I know this is a hard concept for many to grasp – I even have a bit of trouble with it. But the benefits are tremendous. Here are a few myths and facts that might make you decide to turn your key, and be idle-free. Myth: You need to warm up your engine before driving. Experts say that yes, the car needs to be warmed up, but idling is not the way to do it. To warm up the car, let … Continue reading

Mommy Burn Out

Anyone who knows me will tell you that I’m a relative energizer bunny. I rarely slow down and even when I’m sick, I’m still going. I hate to be idle. . .the worst weekend or vacation in the world for me, would consist of sitting around just “being”. Even in the early days of my twins, I swore I was getting nothing done and while my house might not have been a vision of pristine, those around me kind of watched dumb founded as I homeschooled, had dinner done, and kept sanity and peace among five children under the age … Continue reading

I’d Never Do That!

Have you ever watched people yelling at their kids or arguing with their spouse, in a public place and thought I’d never do that? Or seen someone react to a generous offer by brushing the person’s generosity aside with a curt ‘No, I’m okay,’ and think I’d never do that? Or hear someone pay a compliment to another and hear it brushed aside by the pious comment, ‘It’s the Lord doing it.’ Do you ever see Christians in the news for all the wrong reasons as mentioned in the blog I read this morning about ‘Christians behaving badly’ and think … Continue reading
