Great Green Reads

Earth Day’s mission to increase environmental awareness means very little to young children, unless you make it relevant. Fortunately, there are a slew of kid-friendly books available to drive home the importance of preserving our planet.  The following affordable titles prove that you don’t have to spend a ton of green to go green: The Berenstain Bears Go Green “Going green isn’t hard to do. It’s good for the earth and me and you, too!” Who better to show kids how to take care of the earth’s precious natural resources than the Bear family? After all, the cuddly clan not … Continue reading

Green Halloween 2012

Halloween is almost here, but it is not too late to still think green. If you are still looking for a costume, I wish I had told you sooner about Green Halloween. It is a website that promotes a green Halloween. The site sponsors a yearly National Costume Swap Day, but I learned about it too late this year to advertise it here. It was Oct 13th, but it is still not too late to hold your own costume swap day. You can get together with friends from playgroup, other mothers from school or church or anyone you know with … Continue reading

Great Green Website for Kids

The children are our future and most of us want to teach them to respect our planet and all the creatures on it. We have blogged about ways to do that, but there are also excellent online resources you can use. My 5-year-old loves any excuse to get on his computer, so why not teach him something while he has fun? Yes, I am a tricky mommy. Kids F.A.C.E. Kids F.A.C.E. stands for Kids (F)or (A) (C)lean (E)nvironment. This website encourages kids to get involved in improving the environment. Melissa Poe started Kids F.A.C.E. in 1989 with only six members. … Continue reading

Disney’s Project Green

This Thursday, April 22, is the fortieth anniversary of Earth Day. In honor of that I’m making it Earth Week on the Disney blog, and I’m going to explore ways in which the Walt Disney Corporation contributes to ecological causes. Now that green is hip and mega global conglomerates like Disney are getting in on the environmental action, I start to wonder if the trendiness of green initiatives doesn’t sometimes overshadow or outweigh actual conservation efforts. Take Disney’s Project Green, for example. The House of Mouse throws together a splashy website, herds Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato out of the … Continue reading

Homemade Green Cleaning Products That Work – Bleach Cleaner

Having five daughters means there’s a healthy mix of likes and dislikes, beliefs, and personal or world views to consider. One of my kids is a vegan, two are vegetarian, a few are worried about global warming, some are concerned about animal cruelty, and my 16-year-old pretty much thinks the entire world and everyone in it sucks right now. I try to remain open-minded and support them, but it can be tough and frustrating at times. I’ve stopped buying paper towels and paper plates, though I refuse to stop buying toilet paper! I read labels carefully to be sure they … Continue reading

Say It With Flowers

Yesterday my second grader selected the Valentine’s Day cards and treats she plans to gift to her classmates in about, oh, three weeks or so. Given that Wal-Mart, Target and Walgreens have been selling Valentine’s Day paraphernalia since December 27th, I figured we’re far from ahead of the curve. Not far from the Scooby-Doo, Snoopy and Smurf cards were two gigantic displays of Love Day-themed scrapbook embellishments. Two gigantic displays of overpriced Love Day-themed embellishments. Personally, I don’t craft more than two Valentine’s Day-themed layouts per year, so my wallet is not screaming out in pain after coughing up the … Continue reading

Paper plates are inexpensive and make fun crafts. The materials can mostly be found in your craft box at home. Kids love to use paper plates to make all types of fun crafts so just having a supply will keep your child having fun with arts and crafts. Purchase the most inexpensive paper plates at your store. The uncoated ones work the best but if you have coated at home don’t worry. Tambourine: Place a paper plate on the table. Add dried beans or rice to the plate. Put another plate upside down on top of the plate and staple … Continue reading

Recycling Old Socks

Okay, you may have read this blog headline and thought “ew,” but you can find a useful afterlife for your old socks. And how nice would it be to find a use for that sad little sock that somehow lost its mate in the washer or dryer? I know we always have mateless socks around this house. Here are a few things you may want to do with old, clean socks: Heating Pad I always read about how you can make a heating pad out of rice and material, such as a sock and I always think I will make … Continue reading
