Green Celebrities: Bob Barker

Bob Barker left “The Price is Right” in 2007, but as a game show host, he remains a television icon. If you ever watching him on the show, you may remember that at the end of almost every episode, he reminded us to “Help control the pet population. Have your pets spayed or neutered.” (This work is in the public domain in that it was published in the United States between 1923 and 1977 and without a copyright notice. Unless its author has been dead for several years, it is copyrighted in jurisdictions that do not apply the rule of … Continue reading

Bob Barker Pays To House Elephant

What’s that saying: “If you’ve got it–spend it.” While other celebrities are donating money to poor children in Africa, their alma maters, and victims of natural disasters one popular game show host is pledging hundreds of thousands of dollars to his pet cause—animals. “The Price Is Right” host Bob Barker says he will pledge $300,000 toward housing an elephant from the Los Angeles Zoo in an animal sanctuary. Barker’s publicist told news reporters the donation would match other monetary contributions made in support of sending Ruby, a 45-year-old African elephant, to a sanctuary in San Andreas in Northern California. Currently, … Continue reading

Lady Gaga vs. PETA – Round 2

Lady Gaga may be celebrity fur wearing public enemy #1 for PETA. Gaga didn’t make any vegetarian, vegan, or even PETA friends when she wore a meat dress to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. Yes, the dress was made of raw meat – beef to be exact. It certainly stood out – something difficult to do at any MTV awards show since fashion seems to be a free-for-all. Even TIME gave her the top fashion statement of 2010. The “statement” Gaga was trying to make with her dress, designed by Franc Fernandez, was that people should fight for what … Continue reading

Donald Trump’s Sons Under Fire

Usually when you hear about a Trump in trouble, it’s Donald Sr. He does tend to open his mouth sometimes when he shouldn’t. But this week, it is Donald’s sons that have people talking and not in a good way. Two junior Trumps, Donald Jr. and Eric, went hunting on an African safari in Zimbabwe last year and just this past week, pictures of the safari showed up online on YouTube. The one photo I found most gruesome was Donald Jr. hold a severed elephant tail in one hand and a knife in the other. Other trophy photos, originally posted … Continue reading

October 20th is Spirit Day

Not long ago, I blogged about It Gets Better, an organization to help fight against bullying of LGBT teens and young adults. Many LGBT teens and young adults have committed suicide recently after bullying and abuse by peers. To help further raise awareness, October 20th has been declared Spirit Day by Canadian teenager Brittany McMillan. Last year was the first observance, but since then, many organizations such as the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and many celebrities are donning purple to show their support. The color and name was derived from the rainbow flag. In the flag, the … Continue reading

California Looks At A Pet Neutering Law

The state that is home to the American Kennel Club’s second largest dog show is looking at some pretty strict legislation to help curb pet overpopulation. California’s Assemblyman Lloyd Levine is sponsoring a bill that would require pet owners to sterilize their dogs and cats by the time the pet is four months old or face a hefty fine. The bill squeaked by in the Assembly, passing by a single vote. If passed by the California State Senate, the bill would be the nation’s biggest and baddest pet sterilization law. The goal is to reduce the number of dogs and … Continue reading

Stars’ Efforts To Help Save The Children And The Environment

Typically, she makes headlines for shaking her hips in outrageous midriff baring outfits while belting out Grammy award-winning tunes, but these days singer Shakira is getting more attention for promoting a project she describes as important as her musical career—helping children living in poverty. The 29-year-old singing sensation has launched a star-studded foundation to combat child poverty: the Latin America in Solidarity Action, whose Spanish acronym is ALAS, or “wings.” Earlier this week, Shakira joined forces with fellow Colombian and Nobel Prize laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez to launch the campaign in Panama City. At the ceremony the celebrities pledged “to … Continue reading
