Cynthia Nixon Riles Gay Activists

It seems to me (and forgive me if I am wrong) that most gay people believe they were born that way, that it wasn’t a choice. I mean, after all, many ask who would choose to be persecuted and discriminated against as they often are? Still, some people think it is a choice. Unlike someone who is female, African American, or physically handicapped, you can’t look at someone who is gay and know why. Some say they always felt gay, but were afraid to express it. But, there is no physical sign to the fact that they are gay and … Continue reading

Green Celebrities: Cynthia Nixon

Cynthia Nixon is probably best known as the lawyer Miranda from the series “Sex and the City.” But, since the series ended in 2004, Nixon has focused much of her attention to charitable contributions. Nixon, herself a product of New York City schools, first became an education activist. She became involved in the Alliance for Quality Education (AQE), in part because her own children attended NYC schools. The AQE fights for quality education and funding for the public schools. In 2003, Nixon left her longtime boyfriend, Danny Mozes, and began dating education activist Christine Marinoni. In 2006, she was diagnosed … Continue reading

Green Celebrities: Cyndi Lauper

She may have just wanted to have fun in the ‘80s, but Cyndi Lauper has since grown up. Actually, her support of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transsexual) rights isn’t a new thing for Lauper – she has been a long time supporter. Lauper got her activist start with labor issues when she worked as a flight attendant in the ‘80s. After that, she did work with the National Organization of Women (NOW). Later, she started working with the Human Rights Campaign (HRC). The HRC is an organization focused on the civil rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT). … Continue reading

Mr. Big Gives Back

I always loved the series “Sex and the City.” I loved the freedom the girls experience, but I also loved how Carrie kept going back to Mr. Big. We didn’t learn his name until the series finale (it was John) because he was such a larger than life character. I haven’t seen the last movie, but I know that at the end of the series, Big had told Carrie she was the one and when the first movie came out, it was revealed that Big and Carrie were married. Guess I am just a sappy romantic because I loved that … Continue reading

Rockers Give Back

Roger Daltrey and Robert Plant are two of the most celebrated rock legends of all time. Daltrey is the front man for The Who while Plant is the front man for Led Zepplin. There are probably plenty of wild rock stories out there about these two bands in their heyday, but now, with both rockers in their 60s, they seem to have given up rock pleasures such as groupies and alcohol for more philanthropic pleasures. Last Friday, Daltrey and Plant announced the formation of the UCLA Daltrey/Townshend Teen & Youth Adult Cancer Program. In case you don’t know, that “Townshend” … Continue reading
