Celebrity Vegans – Part 3

And my final installment of celebrity vegans. Here’s a few actors left over from the last blog plus a hodgepodge of others: Casey Affleck – Ben Affleck’s younger brother is also an animal rights activist who decided to go vegan. Woody Harrelson – How could anyone as green as Harrelson not be a vegan? He committed to the diet at the fairly young age of 24. He credits it with providing him with more energy and glowing skin. Ted Danson – Harrelson’s co-star on “Cheers,” Danson, an environmentalist, just recently became a vegan in an attempt to naturally lower his … Continue reading

Green Celebrity – Elizabeth Taylor

I always blog about green celebrities on my Green Living blog. After all, people like Bono, Darryl Hannah, Woody Harrelson, and Robert Redford all lead humanitarian and environmental efforts. But, it never once crossed my mind to blog about the late Elizabeth Taylor – what an oversight! Taylor became lifelong friends with Rock Hudson when the two starred together in the film Giant. Before Hudson became sick with AIDS, Taylor said of the disease “We all heard of it and nobody was doing anything about it.?” She said, “And it made me so angry that we all sat around the … Continue reading

The Green Cars of the Stars

Yesterday, I blogged about Daryl Hannah and how she was one of the first celebrities to have her car converted to run on biodiesel. But, she is not the only celebrity that drives green. I think the first green car I remember hearing that a celebrity was driving was the Toyota Prius. In fact, when we lived in San Diego almost ten years ago, we visited the Getty Center and they had hookups for electric cars such as the Prius. The Prius has plenty of fans now days, but some of the more famous are Cameron Diaz, Julia Roberts, America … Continue reading

Green Celebrities: Woody Harrelson

Another celebrity that was green years before it was cool is Woody Harrelson. Harrelson has long been a supporter of the legalization of hemp. In fact, he was arrested in Kentucky back in 1996 for planting hemp seed. He eventually won the case even though the state law didn’t distinguish between industrial hemp (used for things such as clothing) and marijuana. Harrelson also scaled the Golden Gate Bridge with the members of Earth First! to protest the harvesting of redwood trees. He was the subject of the 2003 documentary Go Further, in which he traveled the U.S. in a biodiesel … Continue reading

Who Won’t Be Eating Turkey Today

I am not a huge fan of turkey, but Thanksgiving just doesn’t seem like Thanksgiving without one, at least to me. But, there are plenty of celebrities that won’t be eating turkey this year because they are vegetarian or vegan. PETA named funny man Russell Brand one of its Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrities of 2011, so needless to say he won’t be gnawing on a turkey leg tomorrow. The female Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity of 2011 was Kristen Wiig of “Saturday Night Live” and Bridemaids fame, so no turkey for her either. There are several Academy Award winners and nominees who will … Continue reading

Mr. Big Gives Back

I always loved the series “Sex and the City.” I loved the freedom the girls experience, but I also loved how Carrie kept going back to Mr. Big. We didn’t learn his name until the series finale (it was John) because he was such a larger than life character. I haven’t seen the last movie, but I know that at the end of the series, Big had told Carrie she was the one and when the first movie came out, it was revealed that Big and Carrie were married. Guess I am just a sappy romantic because I loved that … Continue reading

The Controversy of Medical Marijuana

The use of medical cannabis (marijuana) has long been a sensitive subject. Research has shown that the use of marijuana can help relieve the suffering of terminally ill patients. However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved medical marijuana for use. Seems pretty cut and dry, right? Not so much. Since 1996, fourteen states – Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington – have approved the use of medical marijuana for patients who have a prescription for it. Okay, so now the patients with prescriptions in those … Continue reading

Hemp Facts

Last week, I blogged about industrial hemp and how it was legal to import, but illegal for American farmers to grow because it is in the cannabis family, which also includes marijuana. I thought I’d list a few facts about hemp that I discovered at the Hemp Industries Association web page: – It is believed that the oldest hemp fabric found dates back to 8,000 BC. Two of our former presidents, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson actually grew hemp. – It hasn’t always been illegal to grow hemp in the U.S. In fact, during World War II, the government subsidized … Continue reading

What is Hemp?

You may have heard about the controversy over the use of hemp for clothing, soap, building materials, bedding, paper, fuel, and even food and medicine. Woody Harrelson has been arrested for planting it. What? Arrested for planting a seed? Well, the problem is that hemp is the common name used to refer to plants in the cannabis family. If that doesn’t sound familiar, marijuana is one of the plants in the cannabis family. More than 30 industrialized countries including Canada, China, and France, have produced an industrial form of hemp. However, the U.S. government doesn’t distinguish between the industrial form … Continue reading
