Fun and Easy Ways to Go Green

Earth Day 2013 is less than a week away.  How are you planning to celebrate? Fortunately, you don’t have to spend a lot of green to go green.  All you need is a little time and some motivation to recycle what you already own.  By repurposing materials you would otherwise toss in the trash, you are not only saving money and showing your kids simple ways to save the planet, but you’re also giving them an outlet to showcase their creative energy. Placemats:  Rather than spend cash on everyday placemats, consider making your own with poster board, old magazines and … Continue reading

Our Daughter’s First Easter Part III

Our daughter’s nap did not last long. It seems there is too much exciting things going on for her to sleep more than ten minutes. Ten minutes must have been enough time for a nap because she awoke in a good mood ready to be held by one of her great aunts. She smiled as she was passed from one great aunt to another. After a good thirty minutes she fell asleep in the arms of yet another great aunt and had yet another nap. Meanwhile, it was time for Easter dessert. I made fifteen individual Creme Brulees and grandma … Continue reading

Easter Egg Envy

To quote The Beatles: “I long for yesterday.” Back then you didn’t have to have a degree in mixology and interior design to decorate Easter eggs. All you needed were a few bowls, some hard-boiled eggs, a handful of dissolving dye tablets and a wire dunker. Every year it was PAAS or bust. Parents of my generation know that PAAS is the Kleenex of Easter egg decorating kits. So, why mess with success? Today, moms and dads are bombarded with crazy egg decorating sets that require mad scientist skills to jazz-up hard-boiled ovum in time for Easter. Long gone are … Continue reading

Spicing Up Easter Layouts

For scrapbook designers looking to put a little hop into an otherwise boring Easter-themed layout, consider channeling your inner Jerry Seinfeld or Maya Angelou. Sharing a smile along with Easter photos of your family members can go a long way to liven up a traditional holiday page design. For instance, rather than simply adhering a bunch of pictures of your children participating in an outdoor egg hunt on plain scrapbook paper, pepper the space with silly Easter jokes, such as: What did the eggs do when the light turned green? They egg-cellerated What kind of plants do eggs keep? Eggplants! … Continue reading

Spring Into Easter

With less than a week until Easter, many procrastinators are scrambling to get eggs, candy and festive holiday decorations together. You don’t have a ton of time before Peter Cottontail comes hopping down the Bunny Trail; however, that doesn’t mean you should call off the holiday all together. Rather, set aside a couple of hours sometime this week to craft these simple and affordable Easter goodies that will help dress-up your holiday table: SWEET COCONUT NESTS Ingredients: 1/2 teaspoon water 4 drops of green food coloring (you can use yellow or orange if you want to mix things up) 1-1/4 … Continue reading

Green Easter

It’s almost Easter and as always, when holidays are near, my mind turns to celebrating them in a green way. First, you can make your own Easter basket, but you may not be that crafty. I would love to be able to make a cute cloth basket, but I cannot sew, so I just have to settle for purchasing one at the store. You can get a simple basket then allows the kids to decorate it with eco-friendly items such as fresh flowers, bows made from scraps of fabric, and felt eggs and bunnies. If you want to be really … Continue reading

Freakazoid Parents Ruining Easter for Kids

I will never subject my sweet, innocent little lamb to another hare-raising event like it ever again. NEVER. EVER. EVER. AGAIN! I wrote those words on April 9, 2009, on this very blog. They were inspired by a bunch of freakazoid parents who decide to “help” their kids at a public Easter egg hunt. And by help I mean run over, elbow, flatten and otherwise traumatize innocent little children whom they did not give birth to, so they could get their grubby adult hands on plastic eggs and hand them to their offspring. So much for egg “hunting,” not to … Continue reading

The Osterbaum – A German Easter Tradition

Does your family have a brightly colored Osterbaum this Easter? Perhaps you have noticed that some of the people in your neighborhood have decorated a tree in their front yard with dozens of plastic eggs. If you do not have German heritage, then this particular Easter tradition may be a bit confusing for you. I imagine these Easter Trees would be really confusing to someone whose family does not celebrate Easter. The word “Osterbaum” is German, and it translates to “Easter Tree” in English. If you are of German heritage, or if you took a German class when you were … Continue reading

Easter Scramble

With Easter less than 48 hours away, many families are making the last-minute hop to the holiday finish line. I can sorely relate. I still have eggs to color, candy to sort, baskets to build and hiding places to hunt down. I also have to contribute to an Easter Sunday brunch we’ve been invited to, which means I will be in the kitchen most of Saturday trying to whip up spring-themed recipes. I spent way too much time today trying to figure out what constitutes a “spring-themed” dish. I figured the brunch’s hostess meant we’re supposed to make recipes with … Continue reading
