The Green Party

I don’t know about you, but I am a bit worn out with all the presidential race news. But, one thing I haven’t heard much about, unfortunately, is the Green Party. It seems like Al Gore should be its presidential candidate, but the Green Party candidates are actually Dr. Jill Stein and her vice-presidential candidate, Cheri Honkala. The Green Party isn’t new – it’s been around since 1984. What is their platform? According to its homepage, the Green Party, or “Greens” as they call themselves, “are grassroots activists, environmentalists, advocates for social justice, nonviolent resisters and regular citizens who’ve had … Continue reading

More Green Innovations for the Homeless

I’ve blogged about Crossroads, the green from the ground up homeless shelter about to open in Oakland, Calif., and the groundbreaking Katherine K. Hanley Family Shelter in Fairfax, Va. Today, I am going to tell you about the Pacific Garden Mission in Chicago, Ill. The Pacific Garden Mission has been in Chicago since 1877, but two years ago, a new, greener building was constructed to house the homeless. The new mission, which has 950 beds, has solar panels and low flow water fixtures. They used local materials to cut down on emissions and recycled their construction waste. Best of all, … Continue reading

Green Homeless Shelters – Katherine K. Hanley Family Shelter

Yesterday, I blogged about Crossroads, a new green homeless shelter that is about to open in East Oakland, Calif. But, it was not the first homeless shelter certified green. The Katherine K. Hanley Family Shelter in Fairfax, Va. opened August 4th of last year. The 16,931 square foot shelter was among the first to receive the Green Globes certification. The Green Globes certification is awarded to structures by the Green Building Initiative of Portland, Ore. The shelter, which can hold up to 20 families, offers an eco-friendly, safe, and secure environment where the families can stay while trying to get … Continue reading

Green Homeless Shelters – Crossroads

Going green is reaching all aspects of society. The other day, I read about a few homeless shelters that are going green. One of the shelters is in East Oakland, Calif. Crossroads is a new shelter that is being built with “being green” in mind. While most homeless shelters are created from old warehouses and churches, this shelter will have solar panels in the roof, non-toxic paint, hydronic heating, ceiling fans, and pressed wheat furniture. Residents will have places to secure their personal belongings with storage built into each bed. There will also be a day room with computer equipment, … Continue reading

Gaddafi Death Investigation?

This week, we saw a true reign of terror end in Libya. Muammar Gaddafi ruled the country for the past 42 years, the longest serving leader in the Arab and African world. He made many enemies at many different turns – when he attempted to acquire weapons of mass destruction, when he took responsibility of the bombing of the Pan Am plane that exploded over Lockerbie, when he reportedly ordered his soldiers to rape women, when numerous Libyan citizens were killed by security forces, the public, often televised executions under his reign – well, the list goes on and on. … Continue reading

More About Sustainable Living and Its History

We talk a lot about sustainable living, sustainable fashion, sustainable architecture, and sustainable food. Tonight, I was watching “King of Queens” and Doug decided to become a vegetarian and become more socially conscious, purchasing Carrie a dress made of hemp. Of course, Doug didn’t stay a vegetarian for long – how funny would that have been? But, many people today are making a conscious effort to live a more sustainable lifestyle. So, what is sustainable living? It is the choice to live your life by doing as little damage as possible to others (that includes animals) or the environment. Simply … Continue reading
