Green Athletes

I have blogged about green celebrities, green musicians, and green models, but there are also plenty of green athletes in the world. First, since the London Olympics are still fresh on everyone’s mind, let’s take a look at a few green Olympians. No doubt you heard the name Usain Bolt a few million times during the London Olympics. Okay, maybe not quite that much, but the self-proclaimed Fastest Man of Earth’s name was certainly mentioned a lot. Bolt took home gold in the 100 m, 200 m, and 2×100 m relay. But, he also serves at the ambassador of culture/sport … Continue reading

Green Musicians – Bob Geldof

Back in the early 80’s, I knew of Bob Geldof for only one reason – he was the lead singer of the Boomtown Rats. The one single I remember from them was “I Don’t Like Mondays,” which Geldof wrote after Brenda Ann Spencer opened fire on an elementary school in San Diego in 1979. Geldof would later organize events that would make him well known around the world. In 1984, Geldof teamed up with Midge Ure of Ultravox to write the song “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” The song was written in reference to the people of Ethiopia who were … Continue reading

Green Musicians – Sting – Part 2

Growing up, The Police were one of my favorite bands. I think even as a teen, I picked up on their political and social messages. Yesterday, I was blogging about the activism of The Police’s lead singer Sting. In 1989, Along with his wife Trudie Styler and Kayapo Indian leader Raoni Metuktire, Sting founded the Rainforest Foundation Fund to help save the rainforests as well as the people who live in them. Each year, the charity holds a benefit concert at Carnegie Hall. Because of his efforts, a Columbian tree frog was named after him (Dendropsophus stingi). In October 1991, … Continue reading

Green Musicians – Sting – Part 1

I’ve done a series on Green Celebrities, mostly concentrating on actors who have been very active in promoting environmental and social issues. But, I haven’t included musicians in that group. Today, I am going to talk about a musician who has served as a tireless activist since the early ‘80s – Sting. As far back as 1980, Sting was socially active. His musical career hadn’t reached its peak yet, but he was singing about world hunger in “Driven to Tears” from the 1980 album Zenyattà Mondatta. Sting performed “Roxanne” and “Message in a Bottle” at 1981’s The Secret Policeman’s Other … Continue reading

Environmentalists Being Killed in Brazil

I think we take many of our freedoms for granted. Take the Occupy Wall Street people for example. They have been demonstrating in NYC in a public park for almost two months now. The police are on duty, but as far as I know, no protesters have been harmed. If only it were so easy in Brazil. This week, an environmentalist who was an outspoken protester of illegal logging in the Amazon has been killed. This is the eighth environmentalist killed since May. Pastoral Land Commission spokesperson Gilson Rego said that Joao Chupel Primo, 55, a farmer, was shot to … Continue reading

It Gets Better

I am one that was born to read bumper stickers. Nothing is more frustrating than to see an interesting bumper sticker that I can’t read. The other day, I saw one on the car in front of me that simply said “itgetsbetter.org.” I was hoping I’d be able to remember that address to look it up when I got home. It has been almost a year since Rutgers freshman Tyler Clementi committed suicide by jumping from the George Washington Bridge after learning his roommate had secretly set up a web cam to broadcast his sexual encounter with another man. I … Continue reading

Barack Obama’s Jam Packed, Star-Studded Inauguration

A while back, I blogged about the upcoming Barack Obama presidential inauguration and how people were chomping at the bits to get tickets. If you have been one of the lucky ones to be promised a ticket, but haven’t reserved a hotel room, you may be out of luck! Hotels in D.C. have been booked for months and now people are stretching out into Baltimore and Virginia to look for places to stay. D.C.. Mayor Adrian Fenty is even allowing citizens to rent their homes out without first obtaining a business license, but that doesn’t seem to be easing the … Continue reading
