Green Uses for Vinegar – Part 1

Isn’t it a great thing when you can take something as simple as vinegar – something so cheap and easily assessable – and do great things around the house with it? For one thing, vinegar is great for cleaning household areas including the bathroom (i.e. getting rid of that bathtub ring and scum from the shower doors), countertops, soap dishes, the refrigerator, and cutting boards. My husband also buys dishwasher cleaners, but guess what? Putting a little vinegar in your dishwasher each month will clean it. And, if your coffee pot is getting a bit funky, run vinegar through one … Continue reading

Cleaning after Illness Has Hit Your Home

Although it is the last thing on earth we like to think about when we have just come out of a bout of sickness, cleaning is important. The last thing I want is to recover, only to get sick again. Although there are lots of areas to clean after your family has been sick, I am going to focus on a couple of them. First, wash all of your bedding. … Continue reading

Clean Out Your Cleaning Supplies

Part of housekeeping is making sure that your house is in order but if your cleaning supplies aren’t, then you just might be wasting space. Think of the number of products and tools you have bought over the years in order to make your job of cleaning easier or more efficient. Do you still use all of them? It’s a good idea to go through your cleaning supplies, products and tools to decide which ones are worth keeping. For instance, despite the fact that my house is 95% hardwood floors, I still keep a vacuum cleaner around. All that does … Continue reading

Cleaning Your Bathtub

Nothing can be more backbreaking than cleaning a bathtub, especially if you have let it go too long and want to bring it back to a semi-clean state. Even if you won’t be able to your tub back to its original look, at the very least you can make drastic improvements. However it is important to know what material your bathtub is made of, since you can cause damage to it by using the wrong kind of products. Some of the newer tubs are made of acrylic. This has a plastic feel and look to it. You may even be … Continue reading

The Green Restaurant Association

When you go out to dine, do you ever wonder how green the restaurant is? Do you wonder what type of cleaners they use or if they have Styrofoam carryout boxes? Breaking Bad Bathroom Habits

The other day one of my children hopped in the shower. When I am downstairs in our rec room I can hear the water running through the pipes. A few minutes passed and I thought to myself, “Sure is taking a long shower.” Then another few minutes passed. Finally, after 20 minutes I banged on the bathroom door and called out, “Hey, let’s end this shower!” There are so many bathroom habits that many of us have that are far from green friendly. However, we don’t always give a lot of thought to those. Taking unnecessarily long showers is one … Continue reading

Green Tips for Toilet Paper Usage

I don’t know if you remember, but back in 2007, rocker Sheryl Crow caused a bit of a stir with her idea of how to be green in the bathroom. She blogged that she thought people should limit themselves to the number of squares of toilet paper they used per sitting. She suggested using only one square unless there were “pesky occasions” where you might need to use two or three. I am assuming this was reserved for number two bathroom visits only. Anyhow, her younger brother suggested she wash out the one square after using it. This caused quite … Continue reading

Bathroom Conservation: The Shower

Look at the bathrooms in your home. With a few modifications you can make them much more efficient and much greener. You can make improvements without doing a complete remodel, but of course if you want to use that as an excuse, go ahead. While it is mistakenly believed by many that it is the only issue in the bathroom for green living, it is the biggest. Let us start with the shower. Yes, … Continue reading
