Understanding Carbon Footprint

I recently learned about a new environmental term-—carbon footprint. Basically, it is the measurement of greenhouse gas emissions that each of us produce. I like to think of it as the footprint that we make on the environment. What kind of footprints will we leave behind for our future generation? It’s amazing to think of all the different sources in our lives and how they can affect the environment. Virtually every activity in our lives has some kind of affect on the environment. Some are more obvious like the electricity, gas and oil we use in our homes. Our mode … Continue reading

Yes, Global Warming is Still Happening

Unless you live somewhere like Hawaii, you have probably noticed that it has been cold lately – very cold! Air travel in many cities has been crippled, with 400 flights at O’Hare International Airport alone being cancelled. In my hometown of Memphis, the temperatures are the lowest they have been in over a decade. Arkansas, where we lived before we moved to Jacksonville, NC, is experiencing temperatures below zero. The cold weather has been responsible for seven deaths across the nation. With all the cold, you might think that Al Gore was just joking around with all this global warming … Continue reading

No-Till Farming: Less Carbon?

Congress began working on a climate and energy bill last spring. A provision of that bill would pay farmers to use a system called “no-till farming.” What exactly is no-till farming? Studies have been done which have led researchers to believe that by having a farmer plant crops without tilling the land first, the land will retain more carbon. This means less carbon being released into the atmosphere and researchers believe this may be a way to help the global warming problem. Department of Agriculture soil scientist Michael Cavigelli has conducted studies on fields in rural Maryland. In his findings, … Continue reading

Green as a Religion?

I am constantly reading magazines and am always on the lookout for an article about green living. I was a bit taken aback when I was reading an issue of The Week (great magazine BTW) and there was a small blurb about a case in Britain in which a man claimed he was dismissed from his job for his beliefs…in global warming. Now, we’ve all heard of religious persecution, but could this going too far? Tim Nicholson claimed he was let go from the property management firm in July 2008 for which he worked because of his beliefs in man-made … Continue reading

Hackers Hope to Disclaim Global Warming

Hackers have broken into a server of the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit and posted private emails and documents on the Internet in hopes of showing that scientists have exaggerated global warming concerns. The Climatic Research Unit, a leader in global climate change research, said that about 1,000 emails and 3,000 documents were posted on web sites after the hackers broke in and stole the information. It is not known as to whether all the emails and documents are authentic. As with most issues, there is a debate over whether global warming is really occurring due to man-made … Continue reading

Henry Ford and his Hemp Car

Talk about a visionary! Henry Ford started the Ford Motor Company over 100 years ago, but even back then; his main object was to build cars that were sensibly priced, yet dependable and efficient. Yet over the years, it seems as if cars have become less reliable and less affordable. Not to mention the price of gas jumping in the past decade. To bring his dream to fruition, Ford envisioned cars that ran on hemp ethanol. In fact, Ford was all for using materials like hemp and vegetable matter to run vehicles. He once said, “There’s enough alcohol in one … Continue reading

Low-Carb Diets and Conventional Wisdom

Low-carbohydrate diets do work. People on low-carbohydrate diets are able to eat less and feel full and satisfied from the high-protein and high-fat foods that are allowed on low-carb diets. These diets have also been shown to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. So why isn’t everybody going low-carb? Conventional “Wisdom” Meaning that knowledge base that doctors of today who went to medical school yesterday and yesteryear have in their doctor’s bags. Their knowledge is based on studies done in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. It is old! After all, the Atkins Diet didn’t blast off until the 70’s and … Continue reading
