National Resources Defense Council Releases Most Polluted U.S. Beaches List – Part 1

You think only the Gulf Coast beaches are bad due to oil pollution? Maybe so, but no southern beach cracked the Top 10 most polluted U.S. beaches according to the National Resources Defense Council. About 3,000 beaches, bays, and lakes were looked at in the Testing the Waters 2010 report, which was released yesterday. In 2009, there were 18,682 beach closings and advisories for various reasons including human and animal waste and storm runoff. While there was a special supplement for closing and advisories for beaches affected by the BP oil spill, some of the most polluted beaches may surprise … Continue reading

Gulf Coast Oil Spill Myths

The media has been constantly reporting about the Gulf Coast situation since the April 20th explosion of the BP oil rig. But, could all this coverage result in myths that are hurting the situation rather than helping? Possibly so. One of the biggest myths is that this is a spill. It isn’t a spill and it isn’t a leak. If you’ve seen the live cam on PBS, you know this is nothing less than a geyser. And, we still don’t know exactly how much has “leaked” out. Some people think offshore drilling has been halted. I mean, after all, President … Continue reading

Gulf Coast Wildlife Update

Scientists are noticing strange things from the wildlife affected by the Gulf Coast oil spill. Dolphins, fish, and sharks are showing up in shallow water, a phenomena scientists liken to animals fleeing a forest fire. Scientists say the wildlife is trying to get away from the oil spill, looking for cleaner waters along the coast where you normally wouldn’t see them. Waters closer to the coast are believed to have more oxygen, but as the oil spreads, experts fear that many fish and other marine life could be trapped by the oil and run out of oxygen. Sharks may also … Continue reading

How Safe is our Seafood?

One thing I hadn’t thought about with the Gulf oil spill was the safety of seafood. Actually, I don’t even really think about where my seafood comes from, I just see it and eat it. We already know a lot of fishermen are out of work and we’ve seen the pictures of wildlife covered in oil. Is the Gulf seafood safe to eat? According to President Obama and other experts, it is indeed. Everyone from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to the researchers at Louisiana State University and local state agencies are … Continue reading

Latest BP Oil Spill News

President Obama put the smack down on BP the other day, saying the company would put $20 billion in a fund that would go to those affected by the Gulf oil spill. BP won’t have to cough up all the money at once to prevent a panic among investors. But, investors got bad news as BP announced it would not pay any dividends for the rest of 2010. There was a payment scheduled for June 21 which was for about $2.6 million which has since been cancelled. The oil continues to flow out of the broken rig. Scientists have estimated … Continue reading

Planning Your Vacation Around the Oil Spill

The other day, I told my husband we should go to the beach here in Jacksonville, N.C. He agreed, saying that we should go before the oil gets here. Sadly, he was only half joking. Many Gulf tourist destinations are seeing oil in the water and on the beaches. Florida’s Emerald Coast seems to be holding up to its name, at least for now. While the Emerald Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau said that some small pieces of tar turned up on the Henderson Beach State Park last weekend, they were easily removed and no more oil has been seen. … Continue reading
