Budget Beach Getaways

Sure, you can save a bundle by driving a small car to the coast and spending your entire winter vacation living out of tent that you’ve pitched on the beach.  However, there are a slew of other ways you can score a budget-friendly beach getaway without having to go to extremes.   Beach packages are readily available to a host of sunny destinations, including Hawaii, Mexico, California and the Caribbean.  The trick to saving more than a few pennies on these tropical getaways is to have social media platforms work for you.  By signing up for alerts from airlines, hotels … Continue reading

Figuring Out Transportation at Disney World

One of the erroneous assumptions I always made growing up was thinking that Disney World worked just like the small local amusement parks I’d been to. Pay one fee, get access to everything on the site, and get around the park easily. We know for sure the former isn’t true, and neither is the latter. Disney World is huge. It’s basically a city unto itself. So any family doing a Disney World vacation that wants to see more than one park has to figure out transportation from one park to another, plus how to get on and off the site … Continue reading

Europe: Know Before You Go

Whether you are traveling to London for the 2012 Summer Olympics or you’re jetting off on an Italian holiday while the kids are out of school, it’s wise to do some research first. After all, it doesn’t pay to perpetuate the “dumb American” stereotype when you are traveling overseas. While smartphones are helpful and very convenient, they don’t provide you with the same organized information featured in guidebooks. Many people shy away from purchasing the highly informative books because they feel they can obtain the same information via the Internet. On the contrary, guidebooks are priceless, especially if you are … Continue reading

Ways to Go Green for Lent

Some people know how to be green, but have a hard time applying it. If you observe Lent as a time to abstain from something, consider these ways to go green: Fast from workday lunch I cannot fast because of my blood sugar. But, those like that like to fast during Lent can consider fasting from their workday lunch. If you eat out, you will save on gas (which also cuts down on emissions) and waste (especially if you drive-thru to get takeout). Consider taking your lunch hour to take a prayer walk or meditate. Fast from the television I … Continue reading

Going Green to Work

I am very lucky in that I mostly work from home. I know that saves our family a lot of money on gas, and of course, the environment with my van staying put in the driveway. I still do enough driving getting my kids to school and to activities, but I also try to save on gas when shopping at stores. I try to pick stores that are closer to me. For those who drive to work there are some ways that you can go green. I know that most of us can’t afford to go out and buy a … Continue reading

The History of No Pants! Subway Ride Day

You may know that taking public transportation is good for the environment, but you may find it – well, frankly, a bit boring. People sit around, doing their own thing, with their heads stuck in newspapers or iPods stuck in their ears. But, every cold January in New York City, the subway gets a bit spicy. For the past eight years, Improv Everywhere, a group that specialized in creating “scenes of chaos and joy in public places,” has hosted No Pants! Subway Ride Day. The first annual No Pants! Subway Ride Day started back in 2002, with only seven participants. … Continue reading

10 Ways to Go Green at the Office

10. Pull the plug One study showed that low power mode (what your computer goes into when it is turned off) accounts for approximately 10% of all the electricity used in California. To make sure you are completely cutting the power off, unplug items such as computers, monitors televisions, DVD players, and microwave ovens. 9. Try telecommuting Of course, everyone is not lucky enough to have a job that allows telecommuting, but maybe instead of working five 8 hour days, you could work four ten hour days to save on energy. 8. Digitize whenever possible Of course, we all love … Continue reading

Public Transportation: The Way to Go!

I know, I know, it doesn’t seem to be the first thing people want to consider about when talking about green living. Americans have become so dependent on their cars and I must admit that the thought of public transportation makes me cringe sometimes. Not being able to leave somewhere or go somewhere else when I want it is hard to swallow, but when I started reading about all the benefits of public transportation, I started to change my mind a bit. By taking public transportation, Americans can limit the amount of greenhouse gases and smog-producing pollutants. Did you know … Continue reading

Reunited and It Feels So Good

In honor of Mother’s Day, I thought I would share the moving story (in more ways than one) of a 13-year-old boy who desperately wanted to see his mother. When you’re done reading, consider what lengths your child would take to spend time with you, and whether the teen’s efforts are not the sign of a larger problem. Kenton Weaver missed his mom. A lot. So much, in fact, that he didn’t let his age, or the fact that he has Asperger’s Syndrome, stop him from formulating a plan to be reunited with the woman who gave him life. A … Continue reading

Good News for Obese and Disabled Airline Passengers Flying To and From Canada

Disabled and clinically obese travelers booking flights on Canada-based airlines were just given a break from the government. A few days ago the Canadian Transportation Agency mandated that local airlines offer physically challenged or clinically obese travelers accompanied by an attendant the ability to fly using one ticket, even if they take up two or more seats. That means carriers such as Air Canada, Air Canada Jazz and WestJet have one year to institute a “one-person, one-fare” policy. The ruling applies to disabled people, including severely obese passengers, who require two seats to accommodate their size. It also applies to … Continue reading
