Recycling Coffee Grounds

I’ve written about recycling a lot of things – blue jeans, magazines, but here’s something most people just throw in the trash – coffee grounds. But, before you toss those grounds, think of some of the ways they may be reused. Why would you want to find a use for old coffee grounds? When they break down, they release methane, which is a more powerful gas than CO2. If you need to dry the coffee grounds for later use, spread them out on a cookie sheet and sit near a sunny window to prevent molding. You can use coffee grounds … Continue reading

Zero Waste

Several times a week, we haul out trash. We never really think much about it; we put things in the trash can, tie up the bag, haul it to the garbage can, and put it out on the curb every Tuesday like clockwork. But, what if we lived in a world of zero waste? Impossible you say? Well, yes, maybe, but the Johnson family of Mill Valley, California is trying to come close. Did you know that the average American family disposes of over 1,000 pounds of trash each year? One day in 2006, Bea Johnson announced to her husband … Continue reading

National Recycle the Refrigerator Day?

It seems there is a day for everything! Today is a two-fer and both will help you get your house cleaned. It is America Recycles Day and National Clean out your Refrigerator Day. Talk about double duty! Just in time to fill the fridge with Thanksgiving goodies. Go and ruthlessly toss those random containers in your fridge. Since we are also recycling today, see if you can recycle any of those leftovers into a meal for tonight. Kill two birds with one stone, the fridge gets clean and dinner is a breeze. Don’t go crazy cleaning the fridge since next … Continue reading

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

I’m a bit of a recycling nerd. I like to feel like I’m doing my part, I haven’t quite figured out how to reduce the amount of trash we generate so I’m trying to recycle and reuse as much of it as possible. Sometimes this simply means looking at things in a different way. There are many things we toss every day that can help us keep our homes a little tidier. The first one being paper towel and toilet paper tubes. How many of these does your family go through in a week? Start saving them, they have many … Continue reading

Trash Day

Its trash day and I missed it, again. Fortunately with just Hailey and I we don’t make a lot of trash but occasionally the cans do need to make it to the curb. If I don’t remember to put them out at night I always forget in the morning. Well, I don’t really forget but I’m always running when I leave the house in the morning so there just isn’t time to stop and put the trash out. Next week I’ll remember. I have a sort of routine that I try to follow the night before trash day, when I … Continue reading

Saving Money on Garbage

You can greatly reduce the amount you spend on disposing of your garbage with some simple ideas. In the town we live in, garbage pick up is not part of the normal municipal service, so we are left to pay for our own garbage pick up service. Of course, there is only one company that comes to our area, so we are pretty much at their mercy. I think they know this. Just the other day, we found an envelope in our mailbox that was pre-stamped to make it easier to leave them a nice big cash tip. The neighbors … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits: One Hot Hotel and the Mystery Behind Hotel Soap

ONE HOT HOTEL In a previous blog I touted the generosity of Hollywood billionaire David “DreamWorks” Geffen who recently donated his newly renovated hotel in Malibu to area residents displaced by the raging wildfires. Geffen’s posh Malibu Beach Inn hadn’t even hosted its first full house of new customers before the devastating fires erupted and the Hollywood mogul turned his property into a shelter for firefighters and evacuees. The inn’s manager told news reporters they couldn’t stomach having spare rooms available and not offering them to those in need. Fire victims are currently staying for free at the luxurious inn … Continue reading
