Recycling Coffee Grounds

I’ve written about recycling a lot of things – blue jeans, magazines, but here’s something most people just throw in the trash – coffee grounds. But, before you toss those grounds, think of some of the ways they may be reused. Why would you want to find a use for old coffee grounds? When they break down, they release methane, which is a more powerful gas than CO2. If you need to dry the coffee grounds for later use, spread them out on a cookie sheet and sit near a sunny window to prevent molding. You can use coffee grounds … Continue reading

Recycling Old T-Shirts

I wrote a blog a while back about how you could recycle old jeans. But, I forgot about old t-shirts – something I have plenty of! What can you do with an old t-shirt? Here are a few ideas: Throw Pillows Old t-shirts, if they are not stained, make excellent throw pillows. Cut a square from the front and back body of the shirt, stuff, and sew together. You can even cut smaller squares from different colored shirts and sew them together to make a more decorative throw pillow. If you have a t-shirt with a logo you love, use … Continue reading

I’m Dreaming of a Green Christmas – Part 2

In my last blog, I had already ventured into the green Christmas territory. I know some are thinking, “Oh no, not Christmas stuff already!” but for others, such as a few of my relatives, Christmas cannot get here soon enough. Here are a few more ideas for greening up your Christmas (and I don’t mean with garland!): Here’s an idea that might be hard to grasp – don’t buy gifts just for the sake of buying them. Cut out the pockets and sew several of them together to create an organizer that can hold scissors, notepads, pens, etc. Denim Placemats Chances are that your old denim is not big enough to make one placemat out of one pair of jeans. Tierra Del Forte may not be a designer name you have heard of, but she is trying to change the jean industry into a more environmentally friendly place. Tierra started out working with conventional denim, but then decided to make a switch to a more eco-friendly style when she started her own company – Del Forte Jeans. She was inspired if you will after trips to China, where she said the environmental impact was much more visible because China doesn’t impose the same … Continue reading

Five Super Green Colleges

It is time for school to start up again. Mary Ann wrote a blog about greening up your children’s return to school, but what about seniors who are beginning to think about college? Here are five colleges that are implementing exemplary green practices: 5. Warren Wilson College (Swannanoa, NC) Warren Wilson College was named the “Greenest College of the Southeast” two years in a row for features like its 300 acre working farm, 700 acre working forest, recycling program, biodiesel vehicles, and solar-charged carts and street lamps. 4. Harvard University (Cambridge, MA) While Harvard certainly has a prestigious educational reputation, … Continue reading
