New York Fashion Week’s Greenshows

It is Fashion Week in New York and many up and coming designers were concentrating on one thing – sustainable fashion. The Greenshows part of Fashion Week was held during four days this week in Village Green, an environmentally friendly condo in East Village. Among the designers featured their eco couture was Gary Harvey, who made a fun dress of recycled laundry bags and newspaper pages. Other designs of his featured reclaimed fabric from such items as wedding dress, old t-shirts and jeans, trench coats, scarves, and Army jackets. Harvey said, “Too many garments end up in landfill sites. They … Continue reading

Stanford’s Sustainable Fashion Show

The other day, I blogged about a few sustainable fashion designers – individuals who are trying to make a difference with their eco-friendly collections. But where can designers show off their sustainable collections? At a sustainable fashion show, of course. This past April 22 (Earth Day), Stanford University held its first sustainable fashion show. The object was to raise the awareness of eco-friendly fashion not only for the students of the campus, but also people in the surrounding area. The fashion created for the show was made with sustainable fabrics, recycled items, and reused fabric remnants. But, the fashion show … Continue reading

Sustainable Fashion Designer Stella McCartney

Have you heard of sustainable fashion? Many designers today are using an eco-friendly fashion philosophy – to support environmentalism and social responsibility through their designs. These designers use environmentally friendly materials, make sure that the production of the garments are socially responsible, and also some designers see to it that a portion of the sales go to charity. One such sustainable fashion designer is Stella McCartney, daughter of former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney. Stella first began designing outfits at the young age of 12. In only three years, she found herself interning with Christian Lacroix. She studied at the Ravensbourne … Continue reading

Who Won’t Be Eating Turkey Today

I am not a huge fan of turkey, but Thanksgiving just doesn’t seem like Thanksgiving without one, at least to me. But, there are plenty of celebrities that won’t be eating turkey this year because they are vegetarian or vegan. PETA named funny man Russell Brand one of its Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrities of 2011, so needless to say he won’t be gnawing on a turkey leg tomorrow. The female Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity of 2011 was Kristen Wiig of “Saturday Night Live” and Bridemaids fame, so no turkey for her either. There are several Academy Award winners and nominees who will … Continue reading

To Fur or Not to Fur – Johnny Weir

The wearing of animal fur by celebrities is almost always going to cause a stir. PETA members have thrown paint and blood on those wearing fur to show their disgust, but that still hasn’t stopped some celebrities from choosing fashion over compassion, for animals that is. Flamboyant figure skater Johnny Weir was called out last month by PETA and Friends of Animals for wearing a costume with a fur trim at the U.S. Nationals. Weir said he received threats, something he wasn’t used to. “I’m not a huge politician that gets these threats all the time. I mean I’m a … Continue reading

PETA’s Mascot Suggestion and NBC’s Rejection

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) often finds itself in the news and this week is no exception. The University of Georgia’s mascot is a bulldog. The school recently lost mascot Uga the Seventh to a congenital heart condition. Uga the Seventh was only four years old – relatively young for a dog. Last year, Uga the Sixth died of a similar condition and it concerns PETA. After Uga the Sixth died, PETA asked the university to choose a replacement from a shelter. After the most recent death, they have upped their demands. PETA asked Damon M. Evans, … Continue reading
