For the Beauty of the Earth

I love the hymn, “For The Beauty of the Earth“. It has been one of my favorites for a long time. Last night, my little family took a drive up one of the canyons close to our house to look at the fall colors. I am constantly awe struck by the beauty of the mountains where I live. Growing up in TX, we don’t have mountains, and it seems like the fall colors are not as vibrant as the aspen trees against the evergreens in the mountains. They amaze me, and I feel like it takes my breath away. As … Continue reading

Tilling the Earth

This past Sunday at church, we found out that our stake and two other stakes on either side of us are being reorganized. In many parts of the country and the world, this is not an abnormal occurrence. In fact, my husband and I have lived in a couple of areas where this has happened just in our short 9 years of being married. The church is growing rapidly, and with that growth, comes change. But, in our ward, everyone is on pins and needles waiting for this change to happen in just under a couple of weeks. Our ward … Continue reading

Poetry for Kids

Roses are red Some orchids are green I love you so much Except when you’re mean I wrote that little ditty when I was in the fourth grade. I’m a poet, and ya didn’t even know it! Unfortunately, poetry is not fully embraced by the American school system. Consequently, many youngsters these days don’t get the chance to fully appreciate the many benefits of metrical composition. According to top researchers for early childhood education, “poetry should be included as an integral part of the language and literacy curriculum because it enriches students’ lives as they discover words, sound, and rhythm … Continue reading

Earth Day Quotes

Tomorrow is Earth Day. There will be events all over the U.S. and the world to honor this day when we stop and learn more about our planet, our habits, and what we can do to leave less of a footprint on the world we leave to our children. Here are a few quotes about Earth Day that may make you stop for a minute and think about things in a different way: “Treat the Earth well. It was not given to you by your parents, but loaned to you by your children.” Native American proverb “When one tugs at … Continue reading

Teaching Kids about Earth Day

I have always said that it is important to teach green ways and social consciousness to the kids. After all, they are the future! So with the 40th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22, you may want to start teaching your children to be green with a few of these ideas: * Teach children to turn off electronics such as the computer and television when not in use. * If you live near stores, take the children for a walk there instead of driving. * Teach children to turn off the lights when they leave the room. * Start … Continue reading

Socially Conscious Kids Raise Money for Haiti

I don’t know how many of our readers are in or near Baltimore, but I thought this was such a touching news story that I would share it with everyone. As part of a private Catholic school, the students at St. Agnes School in Catonsville, MD have to wear a uniform to school every day. Every so often, they have a special “dress down” fundraiser where the students can pay $1 to wear regular clothes. However, for this January 15th’s dress down day, the students were told the monies would be going to Haiti relief and they didn’t have a … Continue reading

Teaching Kids to Take Charge of Their Own Happiness

I know that there are many of us who read this title and wonder how on earth can we teach our kids to take charge of their own happiness when we may still be trying to learn how to do it for ourselves! It can be a joint lesson to learn how to stop blaming and interpreting that the happiness is something that comes at us from the outside. It can also take years to learn this valuable life lesson, but as parents we can start our children on the road to happiness… We can point out to our children … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: His Hands on The Earth

As Matthew 25 draws to a close, the Savior teaches us to serve those around Him when He states, “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” King Benjamin taught a similar principle in Mosiah 2:17: “when ye are in the service of your fellow beings, ye are only in the service of your God.” The Lord knows that there is a time and a place for all things. As a mom of four small children, it can be difficult to actually seek out people to serve … Continue reading

Does Your Baby Snack All Day?

When my daughter was younger, my husband worked very long hours and since I was a stay at home mom, going to school part time and spending the majority of my time with her – I used to let her eat on demand. I did this when she was nursing, drinking bottles and finally when she was on solids. I received a lot of well-meaning advice from people that said I needed to set her on a rigid feeding schedule – but the one thing I knew about my daughter is that I could schedule our days pretty well – … Continue reading

Sunday Review: Quick to Observe

The first Sunday of the month, the Relief Society and Elder’s Quorum is taught by the Presidency of those groups, making them hard to prepare for in advance. But I would like to take a few moments to share the wonderful spiritual lesson I received yesterday, with the hopes that it brings the Spirit into your life. Our class yesterday came from the December 2006 issue of the Ensign, an article by Elder David Bednar entitled “Quick to Observe”. As I listened to the sister teaching the lesson, and then considered it during the drive home, I thought about the … Continue reading
