Possible Gulf Coast Cleanup Solution Comes from…Kevin Costner?

The oil is still spewing out of the broken rig in the Gulf Coast almost a month after the accident. And, it is not like BP has not been receiving ideas on what to do to stop it. Approximately 10,000 ideas have come in from the public. While some are not feasible, BP has said that they are looking at around 700 of the solutions. However, a fix of how to clean up the oil may come from an unlikely source. When what was formerly the worst U.S. oil spill, the Exxon Valdez incident, occurred in 1989, actor Kevin Costner … Continue reading

BP Tries to Stop Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill

As you probably know, the Gulf of Mexico is a mess. An offshore drilling rig exploded on April 20th, killing eleven workers and spilling oil into the sea, to the tune of an estimated 5,000 barrels a day. Regardless that some say the oil leakage is actually more, there is still the issue of how to clean it up the over 4 million gallons of oil. BP, the majority owner of the rig, has reportedly been spending about $7 million a day to try to contain the oil spill. But, the company’s efforts have still been criticized by many, including … Continue reading

Chinese Freighter Strikes Section of the Great Barrier Reef

A 755-foot Chinese freighter loaded with coal and headed for China ran aground on part of the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia Saturday. The ship, Shen Neng 1, was going full speed when it crashed into the reef. Just hours before, it had left the port of Gladstone, loaded with 72,000 tons of coal and 1,000 tons of bunker fuel. The fear now is that the ship will break apart because of the damage done to it. For safety measures, 23 crew members were rescued by an Australian police boat. There has been a report that the … Continue reading

Texas Accident Dumps 450,000 Gallons of Oil

I think we are all aware how horrible an oil spill can be. Birds that get covered in the oil suffer as they are more susceptible to the temperature, can’t fly, ingest the oil, which causes internal organ damage, and unless cleaned by humans, most birds covered in oil will die. The same thing is true of marine mammals. Because the oil covered the top of the water, marine plants die and the food chain of the ecosystem eventually suffers. Unfortunately, a large oil spill occurred in the port of Port Arthur, Texas on Saturday when an 800 foot tanker … Continue reading
