To Recycle or Not Recycle, That is the Question

I am all for recycling but if you are like me, sometimes you are just not sure what can or can’t be recycled. The other day, my husband put an empty vegetable can in the recycle bin. I told him I never do that, and then I wondered what my reasoning behind that was. I realized I didn’t have any – I just always put plastic stuff (and the occasional paper bag) in the recycle bin. How do you know what can be recycled and what can’t? One easy way is to look at the label. There is a standard … Continue reading

10 Green Questions for Your Child’s School

Some schools are beginning to understand the importance of going green, but if you suspect yours is still living in the Dark Ages, here are a few questions you may want to ask the teacher, the principal, or the school board: 10. Does the school recycle? Hopefully there are recycling bins in each classroom, the hallways, and the cafeterias. 9. Speaking of the cafeteria, how nutritious is the lunch it serves? Check the monthly menus to see if there are any healthy alternatives featured on them. 8. Does the school purchase green supplies such as water-based paints, green tissues, green … Continue reading

What is a Freegan?

I know what a vegetarian is and I know what a vegan is. I’ve heard of the minimalistic movement and even subscribe to the 100 Things Challenge on Facebook (not that it does me much good). But, until I was watching the 10th season of “Project Runaway” the other day, I had never heard of a freegan. Contestant Fabio Costa (who is originally from Brazil, but now lives in Brooklyn, New York) told another designer that he was a freegan. He explained to that designer that he gets his meals from dumpsters, to which everyone in the room went “Ew!” … Continue reading

Rethinking Stuff

As I mentioned in my last post, I’ve been thinking a lot about ecology and frugality lately. When it comes to the stuff we buy, they intersect very neatly. Buying less stuff is good for nature, and it’s good when you’re trying to keep a minimalist home, too. Now, my home is nowhere near minimalist, but I do try to keep the clutter down. I don’t need stuff. I don’t want stuff. For my recent birthday, the only things I acquired were plants. Those I need (ok, want). I’ve developed a little checklist that I go through in my head … Continue reading

Green Halloween Costumes

It’s almost Halloween! If you are still looking for costume ideas, why not consider a green costume? What are some green Halloween costume ideas? Well, you could dress as a recycle bin. Just find a box and cut a hole in the middle of the bottom, one big enough for you to fit into it. Cover it with blue or green paper or paint it. Be sure to include the three arrow recycle triangle. Put the box on (you may need to attach straps to keep it secure) and fill it with empty boxes, cans, and bag. If you want … Continue reading

The Low-Down on Unwanted Halloween Loot

I am convinced that Laffy Taffy was created by a starving dentist. How else do you explain its concrete-like texture and magical ability to transform into a sugary rubber band when mixed with body heat and saliva? It’s the devil’s candy of choice, and in our house it takes a direct flight from my kid’s Halloween treat bucket to the trash can, though I have considered storing the colorful wads of sweet cement and handing them out to trick-or-treaters exactly 365 days after my daughter collects them. Goodness knows their consistency can’t get any worse with age. Clearly, I don’t … Continue reading

Back-to-School Green

It’s that time of year – chances are your youngins’ have started back to school. I’ve done blogs in the past on how to be green with school kids, but let’s do a quick review. Here are some questions you may want to ask your school: Do they recycle? If so, there should be bins labeled for paper, cans, and cardboard. What are the teachers teaching? Going green is becoming a bigger part of education, so don’t hesitate to ask your child’s teacher what she is doing as far as a green education. Don’t be afraid to suggest green projects … Continue reading

The Global Soap Project

Soap is something I take for granted. If I don’t have any, I can easily and fairly cheaply go to the store and buy some. Heck, if I were extra resourceful, I could even make my own soap like some friends do. But, while many of us may take soap for granted, it isn’t that way in many parts of the world. Soap is a simple and essential part of fighting diseases, yet many communities are without it. Derreck Kayongo, a Ugandan war refugee, understood the importance of soap and formed the Global Soap Project. Now Kayongo is not only … Continue reading

Get Free Stickers From Annie’s

One of my new favorite snacks comes from Annie’s. The company started more than twenty years ago, and they make foods with ingredients that come from nature and that are organic. Annie’s is a company that cares about the earth. You can get a sticker that says “Recycle” from Annie’s when you send them a self addressed stamped envelope. There are a few other Earth friendly stickers to choose from, too. Annie’s makes awesome snack foods. Cheddar Bunnies are small crackers that are shaped like little tiny bunnies. They come in the form of the profile view of a rabbit … Continue reading
