World’s Most Polluted Beaches 1

If you are like me, when you think of a beach, you think of vacation, sun, white sand, lawn chairs with umbrellas, and a frosty drink that contains slices of fruit. But, that is not always the case with many of the world’s beaches. Some are nasty, polluted places that no one wants to visit. While many are fighting today to protect oceans and beaches, many are still in need of a lot of help. Such is the plight of the Chowpatty Beach in Mumbai, India. The beach is filled with debris, including remains of salvaged ships. And if it … Continue reading

September 21 is World Peace Day, also known as International Day of World Peace. The United Nations (U.N.) General Assembly declared September 21 International Day of Peace and the first occurrence was celebrated in 1982. So what exactly is World Peace Day? Well, it is all about peace. In some cases, it may be used for a temporary cease fire in the case of war. Each September 21, the day starts out with the “Peace Bell” being rang at the UN Headquarters in New York City. For those that don’t know, the “Peace Bell” is made of coins donated from … Continue reading

March Into St. Patrick’s Day

Traveling to a spectacular St. Patrick’s Day parade doesn’t require a ton of effort on my part since I live near a city that is home to one of the best of the best. Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has been celebrating St. Paddy’s Day with marching bands and crowds of revelers since March 17, 1843. The event predates Milwaukee’s incorporation as a city and the statehood of Wisconsin. This year the parade takes place on Saturday, March 12th at high noon in downtown Milwaukee. The event gets underway in front of the Shops of Grand Avenue on 3rd and Wisconsin, and proceeds … Continue reading

World Oceans Day

Ironically enough, today is World Oceans Day. Given the BP situation in the Gulf, it seems that we are more aware of the ocean than ever before, but that doesn’t make it a good thing, World Oceans Day was proposed by Canada at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992. Countries celebrated June 8th as World Oceans Day, but it wasn’t until last year when the United Nations finally made it official. Each year, the World Ocean Network, a worldwide organization to promote ocean sustainability, and The Ocean Project, a network of organizations to promote ocean education, … Continue reading

Mother Ocean Day 2007: Respecting Her Creatures

Today is Mother Ocean Day. Especially appropriate this year with Mother’s Day tomorrow. We’ve kind of got a theme going on this weekend! What Mother Ocean Day Is All About I don’t really know. I couldn’t find any information about why May 12th is designated as this day or who started it. I thought maybe the Surfrider Foundation had, but I found only limited references to it on their site. What I Think Mother Ocean Day Is All About I think “Mother Ocean” is like “Mother Earth.” She’s a world unto herself and provides a home for life of all … Continue reading

Valentines Day: God’s Valentine

When you think of Valentine’s Day, what do you think of? Many people think about love, and spending time with the sweetheart in their life. Some people think of chocolates, flowers, dining out and taking time to let the person you adore know they’re special. Some religions including Jehovah’s Witnesses do not celebrate Valentines Day. Part of the reason is the pagan origins of the holiday, and some of it is because we should show love every day, not just on February 14th. Most of us take Valentine’s Day to go the extra mile and show our love to the … Continue reading

More Green Athletes

Yesterday I was blogging about green athletes and I realized there were way more than I knew about, so this turned into a two-part blog. Competitive swimmer Natalie Coughlin needs minerals and vitamins to give her energy, especially during the Olympics. How does she get it? By having her own chickens lay fresh eggs and growing vegetables in her own garden. It’s not only Olympic athletes who try to live green though. NFL linebacker Will Witherspoon, an animal lover, raises Animal Welfare Approved grass-fed cattle. He spoke before Congress against the practice of feeding farm animals antibiotics. NFL fullback Ovie … Continue reading
